Hello Readers

I am extremely happy right now because I just found out that I am going to see my favorite singer, Taylor Swift in concert!

A few months ago my parents told me that they had a big surprise for me if I got exempted from all 4 of my exams, But today they gave me the surprise and told me that we are going anyway, even if I don’t get exempted, they said that I worked hard and have got good grades. Well I am very excited. The concert is not until October but that won’t be long coming.

I don’t only get to see her but Brad Paisley and Rodney Atkins will be there to. It is actually a Brad Paisley concert and Taylor and Rodney are just opening for him, but I am still calling it a Taylor Swift concert :) .

Until Next Time, Toni

Welcome to the North

Hello Readers

when I woke up this morning and looked out the window I almost cried.  :( All I saw was white. :o  It is May 24 and we got snow! There were a lot of unhappy people in Snow Lake today. We all thought we got rid of the snow, and now it is back. I don’t think it will be here long. It is supposed to be nice this weekend, so hopefully it will be gone by tomorow. I took a few pictures this morning. Take a look and see …

Censorship

April 26th, 2007 by ruggie-girl in School · 2 Comments

Hello Readers

What is Censorship?

Censorship is the ability to prevent something from being published. If you think something is inappropriate or will offend someone else you can censor it and it will no longer be published.

Why are things censored?

Things are censored because they are inappropriate or will offend someone in anyway. My favorite singer Taylor Swift has a song out called ” Tear Drops on My Guitar. ” When you listen to this song on her CD she says a swear word in it. When you watch the music video for it she took out the swear word and adds other words in its place. You can watch the censored music video here. This is a form of censorship. Not being able to publish something because of inappropriate language.

Do you think there are “good” reason to censor some material?

Yes I do think that there are good reasons to censor some material. I think if some material is offending, disrespectful, or inappropriate it is a good reason to censor it. I don’t think people should be allowed to publish something that will hurt someone else.

Mr. Fisher wrote a post on his Remote Access blog talking about the terrorism video, and why he didn’t want this one picture being published.

Do you think I (Mr. Fisher) was right in censoring the terrorism video?

Yes, I think that you were right in censoring the video, but when I watched the video without the picture I still understood what they were talking about. Although I think that the picture makes it more noticeable.

ITL Reflection

April 23rd, 2007 by ruggie-girl in Teen Life Project · No Comments

Hello Readers

What have you learned about your topic?
I have learned that teen smoking is more popular then I thought it was. More teens are staring to smoke each day. I have learned more about the effects of smoking, and what will happen to you if you start smoking. I now realize that there are serious consequences to those who start smoking.

What have you learned about collaborating locally and internationally?
When Mr. Fisher first told us about this project I thought that it would be very difficult to communicate with the kids on the other side of the world, but I found out that is wasn’t that hard. The internet allows us to do so much more then we ever could be before. There are so many programs out there that allow us to communicate and talk to each other.

When Ashley and I were making the video it was hard trying to figure out how to animate poems, what colour to put our fonts, or where to put the pictures, because we are not sure if our other partners around the world will like what we have done to the video.

What would have made this project easier/better/more interesting?
I think doing more live Skype calls would have made it more interesting. I though that the first one we did was interesting and it allowed us to learn about other community’s and the troubles that they have in daily life. I think if we did another Skype call about the videos it would have aloud us to here what they think and it would also make it more easier for us to make the video. I also think if we arrange a way to talk to our partners about our videos that it would of also made it easier.

What have you learned about telling a story combing pictures/music/videos/voice/text?
I have learned that creating a video that tells a good story is not easy. There are many things that you have to worry about. You have to make sure you have the right music to fit your topic. You also have to make sure you put the pictures, poems, and videos together in an effective way. When you have voice in you video it has to be clear and easy to understand. When you are telling a story you have to consider your audience and what they want. Even if you like the cool fonts they may not be easy to read. So you have to pick a clearer font that may not be so cool but is easy for the audience to read.

It was fun to make these videos and I think everyone did a great job. Hope you enjoy watching them.

Mixtures

April 11th, 2007 by ruggie-girl in School · No Comments

Hello Readers

Lately in science class we have been doing a unit on solutions and mixtures.

4 different types of mixtures and solutions are:

Heterogeneous Mixture (Mechanical Mixtures): you can see all the substances that are mixed into it.

For example, a granola bar is a heterogeneous mixture, and birdseed is another form of heterogeneous mixture.

fire-on-lake-and-blog-post-020.jpg

Homogeneous Mixture (solutions): can’t see the different substances. It looks and feels as if it is only made from one substance.

For example, water or drink mixtures like Kool-Aid are homogeneous mixtures.

fire-on-lake-and-blog-post-023.jpg

Saturated Solutions: is a solution with all the spaces in between the particles filled.

For example: when you mix Kool-Aid and some of the crystals float to the bottom that means all the spaces are filled and it is a saturated solution.

fire-on-lake-and-blog-post-024.jpg <– The spaces were fill and the Kool-Aid crystals sank to the bottom.

Unsaturated Solutions: is a solution that has unfilled spaces.

For example, when you mix kool-aid and all of the crystals mix in, it still has unfilled spaces and it is a unsaturated solution.

Update: International Teen Life Project

March 5th, 2007 by ruggie-girl in Teen Life Project · No Comments

Hello Readers

We are still working on the international teen life project.

There are 20 different topics/groups with 2 students from Kuala Lumpur, 2 students from Virginia, and 2 students from North America (Manitoba or Columbia) in each group. My topic is teen smoking. The North American schools had 2 weeks to do research on these topics and now the other two schools have 2 weeks to film videos about these topics. When they are done filming they will be sending there un-edited film to the two kids from North America, so we can edit it.

Challenges

With all of the technology in today’s society, doing this project is very easy but there still can be some complications. I think that some of the challenges are not being able to see what they are filming or not knowing exactly how things are going. It is also hard to talk directly to the person about how things are going. There is also a possibility that the video wont send or upload right. So you can also run into complications but with technology it is pretty easy to do this project.

Advantages

I think some of the advantages are being able to see how each topic effects different places around the world. Being able to see other peoples opinion on each topic is also neat because sometimes people have very different opinions.

I am really enjoying this project and I think that it is a good experience for us. I hope that everything works out ok and there are o problems .

Daytona 500

February 19th, 2007 by ruggie-girl in Weekends · No Comments

Hello Readers!

On Sunday February 18 was the Daytona 500! Nascars first and biggest race of the year. Nascar is my dad’s favorite sport and I am starting to really enjoy it. So I just wanted to write a little bit about what happened.

My dad was teaching a course this weekend so he didn’t get to watch the start of the race but he did get to watch the end. I got to watch the whole race and i really enjoyed it. :D The pre-race show started at 1:00 pm. During this time they showed a lot of stuff. Drivers running around getting ready, interviews and they even had a performance form Kelly Clarkson. One of my favorite bands Big & Rich sang the national anthem, and Nicholas Cage was there to say the 4 magic words “Gentlemen Start Your Engines”! The actual race didn’t start until about 2:20. Dale Earnhart JR who is our family’s favorite driver started in position 5.

It was a great race. There were 6 caution flags. One of the biggest ones happened with about 27 laps to go. It took a couple drivers out of the race including Dale Earnhart. :( Then it was 1 lap to go Mark Martin driver #1 was leading but Kevin Harvick driver #29 was coming up behind him. Back behind them there was another crash. Clint Bowyer driver #07 crossed the finish line upside down and the car was on fire. Just after he passed the finish line the car tipped back over and he was able to get out safely. It was a VERY close finish but Kevin Harvick won the race.

It was a great race with lots of excitement! I really enjoyed watching it here are a few pictures from the race.

The first one is of Clint Bowyers car and the second one is of Kevin Harvick and Mark Martin crossing the finish line. Look how close the finish was! :O

School Life Around The World

February 5th, 2007 by ruggie-girl in Teen Life Project · 2 Comments

Hello Readers

We are doing a project with different kids around the world. We have a wiki started that we have been keeping information on and we have also had a live skype conversation. This was fun and interesting. The next step in the project is to pick a topic and post it on the “Planning” page on the wiki or put your name beside a topic that you are interested in. I think that this is going to be a lot of fun to do because we get to do a project with a couple kids from a different place.

I have chosen to do my project on school life. A day in the life (or lives) of our school(s). I think that it will be interesting to see what it is like in different school’s, and to see what they do and how it’s different from our school.

I am not sure what form of representation I am going to choose but I think it mite be neat to do a video, going around to the different rooms in our school.

I will keep posting about the project and how it is going.

Until Next Time, Toni

Introduction: Teen Life Project!

January 18th, 2007 by ruggie-girl in Teen Life Project · 4 Comments

Hello Readers:mrgreen:
In school we are starting an “International Teen Life Project” we are doing this project with 3 other classes from around the globe. I am really excited to be doing this project I think that it is going to be really interesting to learn about teen life in other parts of the world. We were asked to write a blog post introducing ourselves.
My name is Toni, and I am a grade 8 student in Mr. Fisher’s 7/8 class. I am an only child my parents names are Ann Marie and Tony; I have two pets A Cat, Louie and a Guinea Pig, Rayleen. I really enjoy spending time with family and friends. I love curling and volleyball, but my most favorite way to pass time is to sing. I love to spend time in my room singing.
Snow Lake is a small community with about 800 people. We have a small school with about 170 students. I love living in Snow Lake, I think it is a great places. I love it in the summer time because there is a lake in the middle of the town so we can go swimming, fishing, boating, water skiing and tubing. I love the outdoors but I don’t enjoy the bugs. Snow Lake is not only great in the summer time; it is great all year around. It makes a great place for Ski-dooing, in the winter. Even though Snow Lake is a small safe community we still have concerns.

A few concerns that we have in Canada are:

Drugs and Alcohol - I think that this is a major issue because many teens and adults in Canada are getting involved with Drugs and Alcohol. Two many people are getting addicted to them and killing them selves or others.

I think Global Warming is another big issue. I think that because many people are not recycling there garbage, and our planet is warming up. That means that in a few years many people will be without a home because many places around the world will be covered in water; unless we start recycling our garbage and taking care of our planet.

I don’t know what to call this issue but I think that just because some peoples skin is a different colour or there a little bit different then us they always get made fun of or put down. I think that this is very wrong, and just because they may look a little different or act different, that doesn’t give anybody the right to make fun of them.

I am extremely excited to be doing this project and I hope I get to find out a lot more about these countries and the way they live.

Until Next Time, Toni
